My hype fixation for this month was Technological Determinism. How does our technology convince us to change, and—perhaps more pressingly—is that for the betterment of our lives? I got started down this rabbit hole through an interview with Ocean Vuong, in which he laments how newspaper voice permanently changed English into the product-over-process forward language it is today. Of course, I’ve linked it for you.
Perhaps as a result of my research, and the fact that everyone is restless and springtime manic, my media consumption is down quite a bit from last month. I only saw two movies, failed to discover much new music, instead resorting to my favorites from adolescence, and read desperately few essays by my fellow substackers. As a result, I would love to add an open request for your recommendations! You know me quite well at this point. What do you think I’d like to see off the edge of your own desk?
